The old seating area has no plants and is not very inviting

The existing seating area in the garden looks anything but cozy. With concrete elements, a wire mesh fence and the slope behind it, it doesn’t exude any comfort despite the new wicker furniture. It also lacks a nice sunshade for hot summer days.

Suggestion 1: A seating area under grape vines

Ivy was planted on the grey concrete wall and the wire mesh fence behind the wicker sofa to easily and space-savingly hide it. Two privacy walls made of Corten steel filled with firewood provide back cover at the lower edge of the property . Through the “windows” you can look out into the surroundings between small planted pots. Since the inner Corten steel frames are simply placed on the logs, the height of the view can be individually selected. There is a Corten steel grill on the terrace that matches the walls . It looks good even when it is not in use.

A vine-covered wooden pergola gives the seating area some shade – if you don’t live in a wine-growing region, you should ask a local garden center about a suitable grape variety

The old patio covering was replaced with large-format ceramic tiles with a wood look, the retaining wall and stepping stones in the lawn are made of natural stone. Blue cranesbill blooms in the tall pots in summer . The ‘Rosemoor’ variety is considered to be stable, forms a second bloom after being cut back and also grows in the beds.

Shade-tolerant plants grow in the corner: yellow larkspur, feather grass, hosta, white foam flower, spotted fern, blue nettle bellflower and the hydrangea ‘Blue Tit’. So that the logs can be seen clearly, most of them are only a small growth height

The nettle bellflower, the lacecap hydrangea ‘Blue tit’ and, in spring, the harebells also bloom blue here. The frequently blooming bed rose ‘Diamant’ and the ground-covering foam flower provide white accents here and there. The secret star of the planting, however, is the yellow larkspur, which is only 25 to 35 centimeters high , because it blooms tirelessly from May to October. Together with the evergreen polypodium fern, it ensures that the area around the seating area looks inviting throughout the entire garden season.

Suggestion 2: A sun deck for relaxing hours in the garden

The second option is a large wooden deck with comfortable seating and lounge furniture, which invites you to take a seat and leave everyday life behind. Two thirds of the area is covered: a pavilion with white clematis climbing up its posts makes the seating area suitable for all weathers. If you still want to relax in the open air or look at the light green foliage of the ginkgo , you can also use the deck chair on the front third of the wooden deck.

The sun deck is framed on two sides by a wide perennial bed

A dense hornbeam hedge with cut “windows” downhill and modern wooden elements with cross battens on the left above the concrete wall provide privacy . To conceal these, evergreen creeping spindles are planted along the entire length in front of it. They are not only suitable as ground cover , but also climb up the walls.

The fresh green foliage of the hornbeam hedge shields the seating area from the neighbouring property. Round peepholes, on the other hand, allow an occasional look into the distance

The flower colours are limited to white, pink and light green. The planting reaches its peak from June, when white bellflowers and clematis, pink asters, lime green steppe spurge and white candelabra speedwell show their colours for the first time. Further flower highlights are added from July with pink primrose , purple globe leek and the sophisticated, delicate green panicle hydrangea ‘Limelight’. The pretty diamond grass is also getting taller and from September onwards pushes its light, fluffy ears out of the dense tufts of grass.
