We will show you two design ideas on how to breathe new life into an aging terrace garden. You can find the planting plans at the end of the article to download and print.

The outdoor area around the brick house is showing its age. Old exposed concrete slabs, privacy screens on the terrace and the faded awning no longer look contemporary. Outdated trees have already been cleared. A cozy seating area by the house with flowering beds is desired.
Suggestion 1: Cozy feel-good terrace with pergola
Before the transformation into a flower oasis can begin, a clean slate is made. The south-facing terrace is changed in its current form and extended a good six metres southwards from the patio door. At the same time, a spacious metal pergola is being built, which will be covered in greenery from the ‘Blue Dreams’ grape, which will provide pleasant shade for the seating area. From late summer onwards, it will produce sweet, seedless table grapes . Next to it, a raised mini water basin makes you want to cool off on hot days. A nice addition is the wooden walkway, which invites you to walk barefoot and is so wide that even a sun lounger can fit on it.

A large perennial bed enhances the area directly next to the house and brings color into play. A multi-stemmed cornelian cherry was initially planted in the middle, which, with its sprawling growth form, takes on the character of a house tree , but does not grow too large and gives the design a harmonious focal point. A path made of stepping stones runs elegantly through the planting and connects the terrace with the side garden entrance.

Robust, heat-loving perennials such as the red larkspur ‘Rosenrot’, the tall bearded iris ‘Caldron’ and the peach toadflax ‘Peachy’ were specifically selected for the colour theme of pink-red, green-yellow and white, so that it flowers from May to October. Lesser-known species such as the evergreen golden bigelovia, shaggy silver bells and three-leaf spirea also attract attention in the bed and are accompanied by the delicate purple love grass, which attracts attention from September onwards with its purple veil of flowers.
Suggestion 2: Surrounded by water and plants
The sunny location of the garden is reflected in the two heat-resistant plane trees on the terrace. There is also a water basin with several bubblers, which provides refreshment just by its appearance. The movement of the water and the resulting supply of oxygen make it difficult for algae to settle.

Silvery foliage dominates on the right side of the terrace. The loose stalks of the blue-rayed oat set the tone here. There are also low, white-flowering pearl baskets and the pink-white buds of the palm lily. The flower balls of the impressive ornamental onion variety ‘Globemaster’ also provide color. To the left of the terrace, as well as in the bed in front of it in the lawn, they perform the same task.
Dividing the planting area into two makes it easier to care for it: for weeding or cutting work, you can easily get from the outside to the middle – and it is also easier to simply tackle bed by bed. However, there are many meters of “edge” in total that need to be planted carefully. In this proposal, gray-green pearl baskets, gray-leaved cushion silver rue as well as rose woodruff and Balkan cranesbill with dark pink flowers hold their ground there.
The ‘Witschowa’ selection of geraniums has a carpet-like growth and stays green over the winter, so that the plantings do not appear completely bare even at this time of year. The flowering perennial is accompanied by the stalks of the blue oat and the evergreen leaves of the palm lily .
